Interesting tidbit - recession and death rates

 "A lesson for companies is that it's possible to make employees work so hard that it's bad for the business." by Geoff Colvin

Quote

The truth, little known but well documented, is that death rates decline and healthy living habits improve in tough economic times. Extensive research by Christopher J. Ruhm, an economist at the University of North Carolina, shows that a one-percentage-point rise in the unemployment rate reduces the death rate by 0.5%. Those are U.S. results, but other studies show the same effect in Spain, Germany, and the 23 OECD countries in aggregate.

People live longer in recessions mainly because they become healthier, not because they face fewer external causes of death, such as auto accidents, which decline because people drive less, for example. What's more, the evidence of improved health shows up in ways beyond lower death rates. As unemployment gets worse, general medical problems become less prevalent: When the economy gets sick, people get healthier.

Necessity or Luxury

Not long ago in the Philippines, a car was considered a luxury in the Philippines but now it's already a necessity.

A few years ago, having a driver to drive you around was a luxury but now it's starting to become a necessity. Why? Traffic jam. It's becoming more convenient have someone drive you around especially if you have important meeting or engagements to go to -
  • don't need to worry running out of parking space, you can delegate that to your driver
  • don't need to waste time looking for parking space
  • saves you time because you can work in the car if you can take the dizziness,
  • saves you the hassle of having to compete with someone for the only space that is left before movie starts rolling
  • saves you enery by spending less time driving

Believe it or not, a friend of mine had a friend Thinking who was stuck in the parking lot for 1 hour. Go figure!

Message to my younger self

This blog is inspired by a book entitiled: What I Know Now: Letters to My Younger Self.

I don't have a copy of the book yet but the title is very thought provoking. Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your younger self?

I have listed 5:
  1. You are lucky your Mom and Dad taught you about money early in life.
  2. If you really want something, don't accept NO for an answer.
  3. Your learn best through experience. You learn best doing things hands-on. Seeing and hearing are your next best way to learn. Then, reading.
  4. Second place doesn't win.
  5. Don't be afraid to succeed. People around you are actually happy to see that you're doing well. Don't worry about the crab-mentality. Not everyone thinks that way.
What's yours?

My dad's English accent

Yesterday, I was reminising on some childhood memories. I always found my dad's accent to be quite different from my teachers' or my mom's.

For example, when my dad made my sister and I memorize the multiplication table, he would make us say...
fou one fou
fou two eight
fou three twelve
fou fou sixteen
fou five twenty
and so on...
I found it odd as I can't hear the 'R's. So I can't help but ask, "shouldn't it be fou'r'"?

Well, now I know 'fou' and 'four' are the same. I can't hear the 'R's from the Brits!! My dad was taught to pronouce in British English.

Oh my oh my... talk about lack of international exposure.

Go Harry Potta!

PS: My dad's English sounds like Chinese/British-ish. My English sounds like... erm Sarcastic strange, uniquely Steph. Hahaha!

When I try to open a bank account... I miss Shanghai

Opening a bank account here in the UK is really complicated for some and especially for me.

You need to provide a proof of identification and a proof of address. Fair enough! It's easy to provide a proof of identification as you can use your passport. As for proof of address, it's not as straight-forward as people might think especially to those who just came to the UK. Banks only accept from a limited list of documents such as:
  • Tenancy Agreement for your new home in the UK -- When I came here last year, I stayed at my friend's place temporarily. His family let me stay in one of the rooms in their flat. I contribute to rent but the contract of the flat is with him and the agency. So, ... didn't have this. Sarcastic
  • Electricity Bill, Gas Bill, Water Bill, Council Tax -- I pay rent all inclusive so again, so ... didn't have this either Sarcastic
  • National driving licence -- I just came here so ... didn't have this either Sarcastic
  • Proof of your previous or permanent address in the country you came from -- Hmm.. I just came here so ... didn't have this either Disappointed
  • A letter from your previous bank or your agreement that they may contact them  -- ... didn't have this either Disappointed
  • A letter from your employer in the UK confirming your address, salary, etc. -- Doesn't really work for most banks Disappointed

Oh... And have I mentioned that most companies needs your bank account number so they can transfer salary directly to your account?! Thinking

The pre-requisites of opening a bank account have other pre-requisites that a non-resident who just came to the UK doesn't have. Sounds a bit like a deadlock situation!

I eventually was able to open a bank account as I was lucky to have received a letter from the home office that was delivered to my home address. I was able to use it with my employer's confirmation over the phone that I work with them. I'm with HSBC.

After a year, armed with my passport and bank statement, I tried to open an account with another bank to take advantage of the higher savings interest rate. They ran their credit checks on me and told me that I can't because I don't qualify. Crying My credit rating is not good enough. I checked with Experian (credit rating company) and my details seem to be accurate and I pay my bills on time so I wondered what they problem was. Even Experian couldn't really help... Experian and some friends speculated that it could be any of the following:

  • I didn't stay in the UK long enough therefore not enough credit history. -- Doesn't paying the credit card bills on time count?
  • The source of my credit history is only from the credit cards -- hmm... so I don't qualify?
  • I'm not in the electoral votes -- Seriously?? I'm not even a citizen. Sad

I know they have these things in place for security. But it's just too complicated and there's no one who really understands for sure why or how. It would have been better if there's a system that can actually identify what's wrong with a person's credit rating and provide steps on how it can be improved.

I miss Shanghai. In Shanghai, you just go to the bank, show your passport and open an account.

But out of all these, at least I have one that I can use. Smile I just can't take advantage of the higher interest rates from other banks.

Still Sunny... Summer ain't over

This week is a really nice week. It's been colder than few weeks ago but the weather is still fanstastic. We have a lot of sunshine today. Do I have to thank global warming for this??

Just kidding... I might get stoned to death with my last statement. Hehe.

Oh! And because it's such a nice weather, I got off the tube at Waterloo and walked all the way to Victoria. It's an energizing 30 minute walk. Sun

Everything starts from a dream

I was reviewing for my Prince2 exam when I suddenly thought of how my parents purchased our first home. I was in the chapter where the author was talking about the start up process. In the start up process, you have a project mandate and first 2 appointed key people - project executive and project manager.

My parents didn't come from a well-off family. When they got married, they were still sort of in the same position. Hehe. They wanted to provide their kids a good future. Their first vision for the family was to buy a house where we could live in. So in case the business doesn't turn out to be that good, we will still have a place to stay. They realized this dream after 10 years of being married. It is one of the family's biggest accomplishments.

(Side note: We only lived their for 1 summer the whole time we owned it as my parents needed to stay in my uncle's factory compound to manage the operations side of things. Talk about 24 hour stand-by work! Besides, my parents were already used to living right next to the factory. Commuting looked like a monumental tasks for my dad. Haha ^^)

Relating my parents experience to Prince2, the project mandate was to purchase a property. The 2 key people were my mom and dad. If they didn't have this goal in mind, it would have probably taken them longer to get one.

Reflecting on this thought, I think in everything in life, we need to have a direction where we want to go. So even if we're sidetracked along the way (scope creep!!!), we still know where we're heading to and can make appropriate decisions along the way.

Summer's over and Camera Dilemma

It's been cloudy and gloomy these past few days.

I guess London summer is now over. I need to prepare for another cold winter season.... Freeeezzzziinnnggg

~~~
I've wanted to buy a new camera since last year but have been post-poning because I haven't found the one that I really like. Now that I have found something I like... I'm being torn between Panasonic Lumix TZ7 and Canon SX200. Both are good quality cameras but both with their annoying negative points... I might just have to wait and settle for a camera with less zoom power.
12x optical zoom is really really tempting.. :-(
Cash from Heaven? (part2)
Hmm.. Money seems to be following me again!
I was in a meeting in one of the meeting rooms in the office, and behold... £15 on the chair I'm sitting on. Surprised
Hope this is a good sign for the coming months for me.
Coming home for Christmas
Since my sister and I worked abroad, it's been rare that both of us are in the Philippines at any single time.
This Christmas both my sister and I have decided that we're coming home for Christmas...
My family rarely have family pictures. Actually, we're not really a "take a picture" type of family so it is very rare that we have a picture where the 5 of us are in it. So I think this coming home trip, a family picture is in order...
Open-mouthed
Cash from Heaven?
Last Saturday, I queued up in the cash point to withdraw money. Interesting enough, when it was my turn, a thick stack of cash and receipt came out of the machine even before I put my card in. It was worth £380. I thought... Is it a gift from God? Should I just take it and walk away?
tsk tsk tsk...
such a dilemma...
In times like this, returning the money to the right owner is the right thing to do. But, the person who withdrew the money is already nowhere in sight. Thinking
In the end, I gave the money and the receipt back to the bank and let them trace the person and return the money to him.
It felt good because although it's not a super huge amount, it might have meant a lot for HIM... a month's worth of rent maybe or a month's worth of food for his family...
I hope he got it back.
Time to Grow Up
Some random thought came to my mind... Maybe it's time I grow up and take life more seriously.
Some of the feedback I got throughout after graduating from university are:
  • "You haven't changed a bit. You dress the same as when you were in university." I think this is not a complement.
  • "You look 18 or 20." a friend from basketball told me. So I asked what made you think so because she was surprised when she found out my age... Then she said it's because of my expressions and body gesture (the peace sign)
  • "You are crazy." This is for the wacky unexpected things that I do. I think this is neutral.
Personally, I think I think maturely. I just don't act like people my age. People my age are more formal or demure with the way they wear clothes or talk. That is just not me. What I am is more of a sunny blubbly homey and active type of person who you can tell things like it is.
But sometimes I wonder, should I change and be like them? Placed in a box and labeled as ------ to fit into what they call ++++++.
I love being me. But most of the time, the world expects us to be something else; to be boxed into what they see as normal and what they understand....
Sara's Despedida; Take home from despedida dinner
Claudia prepared a despedida dinner for Sara tonight. She invited some friends for dinner. The company was good. The food was great. Conversations were lively. I miss these kinds of meet ups. It's unfortunate that some of the people including me have to leave earlier to catch the last train or bus going home. I hope we do an event like this again some other time.
Sara's leaving to go around and travel the world. Surely, the angels will be around her to guide and protect her throughout the trip.
I met new friend in the dinner. Her name is Beatrice. She's the friend of Claudia. There was one thing she said that stroke me... "Think of how to earn more money not how to save more money." I think this has some wisdom. Of course it matters how much you save. But another important aspect into having a better life is to find out how we can earn more so we can spend more... just kidding... so we can have more options.
Found Women's Basketball Team in London
After 4 months of searching for a basketball team/club that I can dedicate my time, I think my search is now over.
I found a team in Gumtree (http://www.gumtree.com). They play weekly somtimes bi-weekly on Wednesday and/or Sunday. And they seem to join some basketball leagues. According to the coach, Hugh Wilkinson, their season starts on October and ends in April. I'm excited to play in a team again that plays in a league... It gives me a purpose to exercise. Exercising for performance rather than health makes my body agreeable to jogging.
I think this is because with performance, my eyes and my body can feel I'm improving. Health and Fitness on the otherhand, is more long term so I don't see the benefits right a way and it gives an excuse to put off exercising especially if it's a reptitive and boring activity. Hahaha.
I tried out today. It seems to be ok. The coaches and the players are also nice. :)
Lessons from Basketball's Greatest Coach
The article highlights the fact that:
  • Winning is achievable but constant practice and trying your best in each practice.
  • Winning is not only about talent but also about other factors that makes the person.
Here's an excerpt:
Lessons from Basketball's Greatest Coach
by Dr. John C. Maxwell
At 97 years of age, John Wooden is a legend in the coaching profession. In 1999, ESPN named him The Greatest Coach of the 20th Century.
The list of honors garnered by Coach Wooden during his coaching career is unrivaled.
  • Over the course of twelve years, his UCLA Bruins basketball teams won ten NCAA Championships, including an astonishing seven in a row from 1967 to 1973. For comparison's sake, no other men's coach has won more than 4 NCAA titles.
  • He led his teams to four undefeated seasons; no other coach has had more than one undefeated season.
  • His teams set a record by winning 88 games in a row, including 38 in a row in the NCAA Tournament.
Winning: More than the score
After glancing at Coach Wooden's record, a person may be misled into thinking Coach Wooden was a man preoccupied with winning. However, nothing could be further from the truth. For Coach Wooden, competition was never about comparing his team to the opposing squad. Despite all of the victories, trophies, and championships, Coach Wooden never spoke to his team about winning.
