When I try to open a bank account... I miss Shanghai

Opening a bank account here in the UK is really complicated for some and especially for me.

You need to provide a proof of identification and a proof of address. Fair enough! It's easy to provide a proof of identification as you can use your passport. As for proof of address, it's not as straight-forward as people might think especially to those who just came to the UK. Banks only accept from a limited list of documents such as:
  • Tenancy Agreement for your new home in the UK -- When I came here last year, I stayed at my friend's place temporarily. His family let me stay in one of the rooms in their flat. I contribute to rent but the contract of the flat is with him and the agency. So, ... didn't have this. Sarcastic
  • Electricity Bill, Gas Bill, Water Bill, Council Tax -- I pay rent all inclusive so again, so ... didn't have this either Sarcastic
  • National driving licence -- I just came here so ... didn't have this either Sarcastic
  • Proof of your previous or permanent address in the country you came from -- Hmm.. I just came here so ... didn't have this either Disappointed
  • A letter from your previous bank or your agreement that they may contact them  -- ... didn't have this either Disappointed
  • A letter from your employer in the UK confirming your address, salary, etc. -- Doesn't really work for most banks Disappointed

Oh... And have I mentioned that most companies needs your bank account number so they can transfer salary directly to your account?! Thinking

The pre-requisites of opening a bank account have other pre-requisites that a non-resident who just came to the UK doesn't have. Sounds a bit like a deadlock situation!

I eventually was able to open a bank account as I was lucky to have received a letter from the home office that was delivered to my home address. I was able to use it with my employer's confirmation over the phone that I work with them. I'm with HSBC.

After a year, armed with my passport and bank statement, I tried to open an account with another bank to take advantage of the higher savings interest rate. They ran their credit checks on me and told me that I can't because I don't qualify. Crying My credit rating is not good enough. I checked with Experian (credit rating company) and my details seem to be accurate and I pay my bills on time so I wondered what they problem was. Even Experian couldn't really help... Experian and some friends speculated that it could be any of the following:

  • I didn't stay in the UK long enough therefore not enough credit history. -- Doesn't paying the credit card bills on time count?
  • The source of my credit history is only from the credit cards -- hmm... so I don't qualify?
  • I'm not in the electoral votes -- Seriously?? I'm not even a citizen. Sad

I know they have these things in place for security. But it's just too complicated and there's no one who really understands for sure why or how. It would have been better if there's a system that can actually identify what's wrong with a person's credit rating and provide steps on how it can be improved.

I miss Shanghai. In Shanghai, you just go to the bank, show your passport and open an account.

But out of all these, at least I have one that I can use. Smile I just can't take advantage of the higher interest rates from other banks.

Still Sunny... Summer ain't over

This week is a really nice week. It's been colder than few weeks ago but the weather is still fanstastic. We have a lot of sunshine today. Do I have to thank global warming for this??

Just kidding... I might get stoned to death with my last statement. Hehe.

Oh! And because it's such a nice weather, I got off the tube at Waterloo and walked all the way to Victoria. It's an energizing 30 minute walk. Sun

Summer's over and Camera Dilemma

It's been cloudy and gloomy these past few days.

I guess London summer is now over. I need to prepare for another cold winter season.... Freeeezzzziinnnggg

~~~
I've wanted to buy a new camera since last year but have been post-poning because I haven't found the one that I really like. Now that I have found something I like... I'm being torn between Panasonic Lumix TZ7 and Canon SX200. Both are good quality cameras but both with their annoying negative points... I might just have to wait and settle for a camera with less zoom power.
12x optical zoom is really really tempting.. :-(
Cash from Heaven? (part2)
Hmm.. Money seems to be following me again!
I was in a meeting in one of the meeting rooms in the office, and behold... £15 on the chair I'm sitting on. Surprised
Hope this is a good sign for the coming months for me.
Cash from Heaven?
Last Saturday, I queued up in the cash point to withdraw money. Interesting enough, when it was my turn, a thick stack of cash and receipt came out of the machine even before I put my card in. It was worth £380. I thought... Is it a gift from God? Should I just take it and walk away?
tsk tsk tsk...
such a dilemma...
In times like this, returning the money to the right owner is the right thing to do. But, the person who withdrew the money is already nowhere in sight. Thinking
In the end, I gave the money and the receipt back to the bank and let them trace the person and return the money to him.
It felt good because although it's not a super huge amount, it might have meant a lot for HIM... a month's worth of rent maybe or a month's worth of food for his family...
I hope he got it back.
Sara's Despedida; Take home from despedida dinner
Claudia prepared a despedida dinner for Sara tonight. She invited some friends for dinner. The company was good. The food was great. Conversations were lively. I miss these kinds of meet ups. It's unfortunate that some of the people including me have to leave earlier to catch the last train or bus going home. I hope we do an event like this again some other time.
Sara's leaving to go around and travel the world. Surely, the angels will be around her to guide and protect her throughout the trip.
I met new friend in the dinner. Her name is Beatrice. She's the friend of Claudia. There was one thing she said that stroke me... "Think of how to earn more money not how to save more money." I think this has some wisdom. Of course it matters how much you save. But another important aspect into having a better life is to find out how we can earn more so we can spend more... just kidding... so we can have more options.
Found Women's Basketball Team in London
After 4 months of searching for a basketball team/club that I can dedicate my time, I think my search is now over.
I found a team in Gumtree (http://www.gumtree.com). They play weekly somtimes bi-weekly on Wednesday and/or Sunday. And they seem to join some basketball leagues. According to the coach, Hugh Wilkinson, their season starts on October and ends in April. I'm excited to play in a team again that plays in a league... It gives me a purpose to exercise. Exercising for performance rather than health makes my body agreeable to jogging.
I think this is because with performance, my eyes and my body can feel I'm improving. Health and Fitness on the otherhand, is more long term so I don't see the benefits right a way and it gives an excuse to put off exercising especially if it's a reptitive and boring activity. Hahaha.
I tried out today. It seems to be ok. The coaches and the players are also nice. :)
My Laptop's Back! and Guess what I see on my way to office...
Finally, after 4 long weeks... My laptop is back. :)
Even though all the stickers that prove the hardware and software inside are geniune are gone because they changed all the casing, I'm just glad that it's back. It looks more plain than it used to but at least it looks newer.
Below are some pictures that I've been wanting to post in this blog... Here are some scenes I see on my way to office using the long way. This is a walk from Waterloo to Victoria.
First, I leave the Waterloo Station.
Waterloo-Station
Then, I see London Eye.
London-Eye
Coming from the bridge crossing over the Thames river I believe, I see Big Ben.
After 20 more minutes of walking, I arrive in the office. :)
Pretty nice huh!!
Missing my Notebook
Yeah yeah... I know it sounds kind of pathetic. How can one miss a thing? But you know what my notebook and I had been through a lot. And the thought of leaving it in the hands of people I don't know makes me worrisome. Remember to what happened to the Hong Kong pop star, Edison Chen? When he sent his computer for repair, his secret photos were revealed to the public. I don't even know when I can get it back.
According to their SLA, it's about 7 days max from the time of pick up. But when I inquired about the return date, they told me it depends if the stock is available. I think I can only get it at the end of the month earliest.
These past few days made me realize how I'm dependent on my computer for a lot of things, especially keeping track of things to do and for entertainment.
Buying it is a really good investment. I just hope it comes back to me in one piece and in good condition. Do I sound hopeless?? Confused Hope not...
London Adventures for the past 49 days
I've been in London for exactly 49 days now. So in this period, what have I done so far?
  • I've found a new route to work. I go from Woking to London Waterloo by train and walk from London Waterloo to the office at London Victoria. Total travelling time from door to door is around 1 hour 15 minutes. I'm kinda a slow walker. I have to walk faster. If I walk faster, I should be able to do it in 1 hour 5 minutes. Train takes about 35-40 minutes. Walking takes up the rest of the time.
  • I met a good friend from Shanghai - Virginia and her sister in London.
  • I met my friend from the Philippines - Jeremy.
  • I've started with a project the day I started work.
  • I've met another good friend of mine from Shanghai - Francis. He came to London for a business trip.
  • I've been to China town in London trying to hunt for the best Hong Kong style milk tea.
  • Played basketball 3 times already. Thanks to Sarah S. for introducing me to people who play basketball here in the office.
  • The case of my monitor is broken and have to be sent to the service center for repair. :(
  • Reformatted my PC because it was infected by a virus.
  • Had my first ever credit card purchase online
  • Showered with icy cold water. Twice was because I didn't know how to turn on the hot water. Today... there's just no hot water at all.
  • Purchased a big GBP 20 bag which I think I can buy in Shanghai for only GBP 8-10.
  • I went to a museum.
I'll try to post some pictures of the route I take going to and from work/home. Still have lots I can do here...
For next month, I'm going to Louborough, York and Nottingham to visit Virgina and her sister. It should be interesting time.
