11月10日 Quote John Wooden says, "There is a choice you have to make in everything you do. So keep in mind that in the end, the choice you make, makes you."
11月4日 Message to my younger selfThis blog is inspired by a book entitiled: What I Know Now: Letters to My Younger Self.
I don't have a copy of the book yet but the title is very thought provoking. Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your younger self?
I have listed 5:
What's yours? 10月14日 My dad's English accentYesterday, I was reminising on some childhood memories. I always found my dad's accent to be quite different from my teachers' or my mom's.
For example, when my dad made my sister and I memorize the multiplication table, he would make us say...
I found it odd as I can't hear the 'R's. So I can't help but ask, "shouldn't it be fou'r'"?
Well, now I know 'fou' and 'four' are the same. I can't hear the 'R's from the Brits!! My dad was taught to pronouce in British English.
Oh my oh my... talk about lack of international exposure.
Go Harry Potta!
PS: My dad's English sounds like Chinese/British-ish. My English sounds like... erm
10月1日 Napoleon HillThere is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants and a burning desire to achieve it.
- Napoleon Hill Last Quarter of the YearOctober, November, December ... It's the last quarter of the year.
Today's my sis' birthday. Lucky her, today is also the first of a week long holiday in China.
Happy Birthday Theresa!!! :-) Hope you have a fun day today! 9月28日 When I try to open a bank account... I miss ShanghaiOpening a bank account here in the UK is really complicated for some and especially for me.
You need to provide a proof of identification and a proof of address. Fair enough! It's easy to provide a proof of identification as you can use your passport. As for proof of address, it's not as straight-forward as people might think especially to those who just came to the UK. Banks only accept from a limited list of documents such as:
Oh... And have I mentioned that most companies needs your bank account number so they can transfer salary directly to your account?! The pre-requisites of opening a bank account have other pre-requisites that a non-resident who just came to the UK doesn't have. Sounds a bit like a deadlock situation! I eventually was able to open a bank account as I was lucky to have received a letter from the home office that was delivered to my home address. I was able to use it with my employer's confirmation over the phone that I work with them. I'm with HSBC. After a year, armed with my passport and bank statement, I tried to open an account with another bank to take advantage of the higher savings interest rate. They ran their credit checks on me and told me that I can't because I don't qualify.
I know they have these things in place for security. But it's just too complicated and there's no one who really understands for sure why or how. It would have been better if there's a system that can actually identify what's wrong with a person's credit rating and provide steps on how it can be improved. I miss Shanghai. In Shanghai, you just go to the bank, show your passport and open an account. But out of all these, at least I have one that I can use. 9月25日 Still Sunny... Summer ain't overThis week is a really nice week. It's been colder than few weeks ago but the weather is still fanstastic. We have a lot of sunshine today. Do I have to thank global warming for this??
Just kidding... I might get stoned to death with my last statement. Hehe.
Oh! And because it's such a nice weather, I got off the tube at Waterloo and walked all the way to Victoria. It's an energizing 30 minute walk. 9月17日 Everything starts from a dreamI was reviewing for my Prince2 exam when I suddenly thought of how my parents purchased our first home. I was in the chapter where the author was talking about the start up process. In the start up process, you have a project mandate and first 2 appointed key people - project executive and project manager. My parents didn't come from a well-off family. When they got married, they were still sort of in the same position. Hehe. They wanted to provide their kids a good future. Their first vision for the family was to buy a house where we could live in. So in case the business doesn't turn out to be that good, we will still have a place to stay. They realized this dream after 10 years of being married. It is one of the family's biggest accomplishments. (Side note: We only lived their for 1 summer the whole time we owned it as my parents needed to stay in my uncle's factory compound to manage the operations side of things. Talk about 24 hour stand-by work! Besides, my parents were already used to living right next to the factory. Commuting looked like a monumental tasks for my dad. Haha ^^) Relating my parents experience to Prince2, the project mandate was to purchase a property. The 2 key people were my mom and dad. If they didn't have this goal in mind, it would have probably taken them longer to get one. Reflecting on this thought, I think in everything in life, we need to have a direction where we want to go. So even if we're sidetracked along the way (scope creep!!!), we still know where we're heading to and can make appropriate decisions along the way. 9月15日 Summer's over and Camera DilemmaIt's been cloudy and gloomy these past few days.
I guess London summer is now over. I need to prepare for another cold winter season.... Freeeezzzziinnnggg
~~~
I've wanted to buy a new camera since last year but have been post-poning because I haven't found the one that I really like. Now that I have found something I like... I'm being torn between Panasonic Lumix TZ7 and Canon SX200. Both are good quality cameras but both with their annoying negative points... I might just have to wait and settle for a camera with less zoom power.
12x optical zoom is really really tempting.. :-( Cash from Heaven? (part2)Hmm.. Money seems to be following me again!
I was in a meeting in one of the meeting rooms in the office, and behold... £15 on the chair I'm sitting on.
Hope this is a good sign for the coming months for me. 9月14日 Coming home for ChristmasSince my sister and I worked abroad, it's been rare that both of us are in the Philippines at any single time.
This Christmas both my sister and I have decided that we're coming home for Christmas...
My family rarely have family pictures. Actually, we're not really a "take a picture" type of family so it is very rare that we have a picture where the 5 of us are in it. So I think this coming home trip, a family picture is in order...
Cash from Heaven?Last Saturday, I queued up in the cash point to withdraw money. Interesting enough, when it was my turn, a thick stack of cash and receipt came out of the machine even before I put my card in. It was worth £380. I thought... Is it a gift from God? Should I just take it and walk away?
tsk tsk tsk...
such a dilemma...
In times like this, returning the money to the right owner is the right thing to do. But, the person who withdrew the money is already nowhere in sight.
In the end, I gave the money and the receipt back to the bank and let them trace the person and return the money to him.
It felt good because although it's not a super huge amount, it might have meant a lot for HIM... a month's worth of rent maybe or a month's worth of food for his family...
I hope he got it back.
12月8日 Be the nice person or be the person who delivers results?Do you want to be known as the nice person or do you want to be known as the go to person/team?
Where do you draw the line?
9月15日 a QuoteTeams are successful when they are focused, have a short cycle time, and are supported by the executives. (Tom Bouchard) 8月7日 Time to Grow UpSome random thought came to my mind... Maybe it's time I grow up and take life more seriously.
Some of the feedback I got throughout after graduating from university are:
Personally, I think I think maturely. I just don't act like people my age. People my age are more formal or demure with the way they wear clothes or talk. That is just not me. What I am is more of a sunny blubbly homey and active type of person who you can tell things like it is. But sometimes I wonder, should I change and be like them? Placed in a box and labeled as ------ to fit into what they call ++++++. I love being me. But most of the time, the world expects us to be something else; to be boxed into what they see as normal and what they understand.... Sara's Despedida; Take home from despedida dinnerClaudia prepared a despedida dinner for Sara tonight. She invited some friends for dinner. The company was good. The food was great. Conversations were lively. I miss these kinds of meet ups. It's unfortunate that some of the people including me have to leave earlier to catch the last train or bus going home. I hope we do an event like this again some other time.
Sara's leaving to go around and travel the world. Surely, the angels will be around her to guide and protect her throughout the trip.
I met new friend in the dinner. Her name is Beatrice. She's the friend of Claudia. There was one thing she said that stroke me... "Think of how to earn more money not how to save more money." I think this has some wisdom. Of course it matters how much you save. But another important aspect into having a better life is to find out how we can earn more so we can spend more... just kidding... so we can have more options. 8月3日 Found Women's Basketball Team in LondonAfter 4 months of searching for a basketball team/club that I can dedicate my time, I think my search is now over.
I found a team in Gumtree (http://www.gumtree.com). They play weekly somtimes bi-weekly on Wednesday and/or Sunday. And they seem to join some basketball leagues. According to the coach, Hugh Wilkinson, their season starts on October and ends in April. I'm excited to play in a team again that plays in a league... It gives me a purpose to exercise. Exercising for performance rather than health makes my body agreeable to jogging.
I think this is because with performance, my eyes and my body can feel I'm improving. Health and Fitness on the otherhand, is more long term so I don't see the benefits right a way and it gives an excuse to put off exercising especially if it's a reptitive and boring activity. Hahaha.
I tried out today. It seems to be ok. The coaches and the players are also nice. :) 7月28日 Lessons from Basketball's Greatest CoachThe article highlights the fact that:
